Blog Post: Canvas Blueprint Project

The TEL team are currently in consultation with Academic Registry services about the replacement of the existing pseudo-course framework with the Canvas Blueprinting tool.

Unlike SIS modules, pseudo-courses are manually created in Canvas and used to group several module cohorts into one course, allowing for the easier management of content. Blueprinting is a fully supported, core Canvas tool which provides an alternative method for managing the deployment of content, from a single Canvas ‘Master’ course, leaving the students enrolled in their correct SIS modules.

Benefits:

  • Clarity: Keeping students enrolled within their initial Canvas module ensures alignment with curriculum management software and other institutional systems.
  • Consistency: Keeping students enrolled within their initial Canvas module ensures that they can access institutional tools that are only available in the SIS module. These are:
    • Key Information: This section of the Canvas course that originally replaced the module handbook. It provides easy access to clear and consistent information about the modules they are studying. It contains a module description, expected learning hours, assessment details, a link to the reading list and links to further important resources.
    • Reading List: Contains key reading material for the course.
    • Timetable: Links to course timetables.

How to request a Blueprint course

If you require a Blueprint course, the first step is to contact Helpdesk and raise a ticket. Please provide details of the courses intended to be associated. A member of the TEL team will help you to identify details around the type of content that is required to be shared and then will create the course and identify the associations. This will identify the content that will be shared and the content that will remain unique to the course. When you are happy with the configuration you can then add yourself and other tutors to the course.

How is content shared from a blueprint course to associated courses?

Once your Blueprint course has been created you will then have control over the synchronisation of content. This process is described in greater detail at the ‘How do I sync course content in a blueprint course as an instructor?’ page.

For any questions or for more information regarding Blueprinting, please raise a ticket via the LJMU Helpdesk.
