The default time in a new Canvas Assignment will be 1PM (13:00)
Why is this change happening?
Previously the default for a Canvas assignment was 23:59. Completing and submitting assignments are probably the most anxious times for students. Although there is no perfect time to suit every student there are several reasons why the previous time of 23:59 is not the best.
- Technical support for students: There is little direct support for students if they have a technical issue. This can unnecessarily increase student anxiety if they have a problem.
- Tutor contact: If the time is during office hours then students can contact their tutor to confirm any points or raise any issues.
- Technical support for students: Staff may have made a mistake in creating the assignment and may not realise this until many hours later. If the time is during office hours, they can get support before the deadline.
- Consistency: Although staff are free to change the assessment time, creating consistency around the expected times to submit can help students develop habits and routines. Students who might be working up to the deadline might find this time more conducive to better learning habits and time management.
This change was made at the request of the registrars and to link with changes in the curriculum guidelines.
Does it change anything assignments I have already created?
No – all previously set times for assignments will remain the same. This is just the default setting being changed and nothing else will be effective.
