Staff Guide: Box of Broadcasts (BoB)

Box of Broadcasts (BoB) is a service for UK universities which allows staff and students to record TV or radio programmes from over 60 channels. Log in with your normal LJMU user name and password.

BoB also gives access to an archive of over 1 million programmes from 2007 onwards. Staff and students can make their own playlists and create clips from any of the programmes available. Recording is simple to set up and you have 30 days to record any missed programmes.

Programmes can be watched both on and off campus in the UK and Northern Ireland. BoB will largely replace the Network Video Service, with direct access to the recording facilities and much more flexibility. Links to programmes and clips can be embedded in Blackboard modules.

If you need further help with logging in, linking from Canvas or making playlists, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.

Adding a BOB clip to Canvas

Step 1: Find a Clip

Use the search function to find a clip that could help your students to see this subject from a different perspective.

  1. Uses the search function to find a programme.
  2. Click on ‘Make Clip’ to select the part of the programme you want to share.
  3. Use the ‘sliders’ to select the part of the programme you want.
  4. Click ‘Save Clip’
  5. Click ‘Share’ this gives you 3 ways to share the link.

Option A): Add it to a Canvas as a Link in the Modules Area

  1. Copy the WAYFless link as this will allow the student to authenticate to see the resource more easily.
  2. Go to Canvas and the modules area of your course.
  3. Click on the ‘+’ button for the particular module you want to add this to.
  4. Select ‘External Url’ from the drop down list in the dialogue box.
  5. Fill in the online form with a title, the copied URL from Bob and click ’Add Item’.

Option B): Embed the video in a Page

Alternatively, if you are using Canvas Pages you can embed the video in the page. This is possibly a better method because you can add some instructions for the student to help them approach watching the video in a way that helps broaden their understanding, e.g “Watch this news clip and think about how the media represent your subject area.”

  1. Copy the Embed link
  2. Go to the page you want to embed this into
  3. Click on the edit button
  4. Click on the ‘Insert/Edit Media’ button on the rich content editor.
  5. Click on the ‘Embed’ tab in the dialogue box the Embed Code you previously copied
  6. Paste in the Click ‘Ok’
